TheLifeRide: Putting a Stake in the Ground in the Fight Against Cancer

Cycling to beat cancer with ThinkCure!

Dear Friends,

Our inaugural TheLifeRide cycling event was a terrific success! Thanks to generous support for the Los Angeles Dodgers and McCourt Global along with fundraising by participants, we raised $130,000+. This is an incredible accomplishment for a first year event!

In a recent interview in the New York Times with Dr. Harold Varmus, outgoing head of the National Institute of Health, highlights why that is so important. Federal funding for medical research has declined dramatically in real dollar terms, and that decline has reduced risk-taking among researchers and the pursuit of basic research. Both are necessary if we want to create a cancer-free future. ThinkCure!’s support of innovative cancer research that allows scientists to examine new ideas and new approaches, and your efforts make this possible.

Cliff Ratkovich, one of the top TheLifeRide fundraisers and a cancer survivor himself, explains why this motivated him to ride with us.

When I received the news in late 2014 that I was cancer-free from my bladder cancer discovered earlier in the year, I wanted to both celebrate and put a stake in the ground in the fight against cancer. The inaugural The Life Ride seemed like the perfect way to do both -- cycle through the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley with fellow cyclists and raise money for cancer research. The event was a milestone experience that exceeded my expectations and a memory that will remain close to my heart. Cliff, center in white, flanked by his 'Men (and Women) of Steel.'

As for the ride, it was challenging and pushed me to the edge of endurance. It messed with me physically, mentally and emotionally. The 108 miles over two days was long, winding and lined with peaks and valleys. The 6,500 feet of mountain climb in front of us looked daunting. But this was purposeful because fighting cancer is hard.

I learned firsthand of the commitment of the passionate and compassionate folks at ThinkCure! and the team of doctors, researchers and scientists at City of Hope and Children's Hospital of LA in their united mission to find a cure for cancer. It is comforting to know that the money we raised is going to such a good organization.

I look forward, together with my fellow Men of Steel teammates, to participating in many The Life Rides to come. Many thanks to the good people at ThinkCure! and CCSD for putting on a fantastic event.

Riding on for a cure!
